The jacket is where fit shows first

A jacket that is almost right is the most common garment in any wardrobe. Sleeves that cover the shirt cuff, a body that billows when buttoned, a back that collapses below the collar — each is a small change for a workroom, and together they make a ready-to-wear suit look considered.

That work is pinned on you, wearing the shirt you intend to wear with the jacket, so the sleeve can be set to show the right amount of cuff and the body can be suppressed with the arms moving, not just standing still.

Sleeves: plain cuffs and working cuffs

Plain-cuff sleeves are shortened or lengthened from the cuff, from £55. Jackets with working buttonholes at the cuff cannot be changed from the cuff end without losing the buttonholes, so the sleeve is altered with them in mind, from £85. Where the change is too large for the cuff end, the sleeve can be taken from the shoulder, from £140.

Lengthening depends on how much cloth is folded inside the sleeve. The fitter checks the turn-back at the visit and tells you before anything leaves the house.

Body, length and shoulders

Taking a jacket in through the sides and back is from £75; the back seam alone, from £45. This is the change that gives an off-the-peg jacket a waist.

Shortening a jacket is from £120, and depends on where the pockets sit — it is always assessed at the visit. Shoulder adjustments are the most involved jacket work and are quoted after pinning, from £150. Complex jacket work may need a second fitting, which we arrange if the cloth needs it.

What we will tell you honestly

Some jackets cannot reach the result you have in mind — usually because the shoulder is wrong for your frame or there is no cloth left in the seams. If that is the case, the fitter says so before taking the piece, and there is no charge for that answer. We do not take a fee to fail.

If the work was pinned on you and the cloth allows it, we recut once at no charge if the fit is not right.

Buttons and small repairs

Buttons are sewn or replaced from £6 each, with a full jacket set at £30. These can be added to any visit, which is useful for reaching the £120 level at which the visit fee is credited.

Turnaround

Standard turnaround is 7–10 working days. Express (about 72 hours) in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast is for hem, taper, waist and shirt work rather than full jacket recuts, so for a jacket with an event date, the earlier the request, the better.

How the home visit works

Send a request with a preferred day and a two-hour window. We reply to every request by email within one working day. A named fitter then comes to your home, office or hotel; appointments run daily, 07:00–21:00, and most visits take under half an hour.

The garment is pinned on you, confirmed in sterling before it leaves, and returned pressed to the same address. Standard turnaround is 7–10 working days. There is a £30 visit fee, credited in full when confirmed work reaches £120, and a £60 minimum order per collection.
