The brief was not “make them fit”. It was “make them belong to each other”. Morning coats had been hired from three different houses. Trouser breaks ranged from a puddle to a crop.

Fitters visited four cities in forty-eight hours. Each man was pinned standing, walking, and sitting — because a Borders kirk pew is unforgiving. We standardised the break at a clean single, suppressed two jackets that had been cut for a different decade, and left the hired house labels intact.

The party arrived as eight individuals and stood as a line. That is the work.
